Debris Discs (aka James Eary ex. Coves & Caves, My Side of the Mountain, Magic Arm) returns with brand new electro dreampop track ‘Cypress Tree’. The track features vocal harmonies from Manchester electro-folk artist Test Card Girl (aka Catherine Burgis), one of Steve Lamacq’s BBC 6 Music Ones to Watch 2021.
The song begins in a dreamy haze with detuned descending guitars, hypnotic electronics, melodic bass and lush vocal harmonies, with James and Catherine’s voices enveloping the soundscape. A four-to-the-floor beat creeps in, followed by warm analogue synth stabs, lo-fi beats and a woozy, almost anthemic piano line. The result is a sonorous and saturated sonic reverie.
The poetic lyrics depict the two sides of a soul simultaneously in despair and denial. From languishing in bed staring at cracks in the ceiling, to blocking out the dread with fantasies of a better life. They continually pass the buck, one side waiting for some kind of epiphany and the other greeted by the titular cypress tree. But maybe the way forward isn’t revelatory or symbolic. Maybe it’s just a gradual, pragmatic acceptance of taking each day as it comes. Just one thing less to do.
lyrics
Now that I’ve embraced this lassitude
I’ll lie here and absorb the room
Trace a hairline crack from the window pane
And leave it up to you
With a sanguine gaze I’ll walk on bye
Colour code the books, do some exercise
Bathe in half light, taste this salty air
And leave it up to you
Well I’m on my feet, swaying side to side
But my languor’s just been amplified
Can I shift from fact to fantasy?
Or leave it up to you?
I’ll leave it up to you
We equivocate
No words to sate
So what’s our fate?
When the world outside looks gossamer
I can make myself feel popular
Should I drift into reality?
Or leave it up to you?
Now I’ve buckled from this leaden mind I’ll accept it was a slow decline
Wait for my eventual decay
And leave it up to you
Maybe now it’s time for a pregnant pause?
The big reveal, soak up some applause
Or is the truth just something quite mundane?
We left it all to do
We left it all to do
I’m waiting for my epiphany
It’s overdue
Step outside and there’s a Cypress Tree
Over to you
We equivocate
No words to sate
So what’s our fate?
We left it all to do All to do
All to do
Now if we could rouse this lethargy
Lay some earth under our dreams
Share one step to alleviate
That’s one thing less to do
